Pilot Flying J

OVERVIEW

This app saves valuable time and money for truck drivers. It indicates which fueling lanes are moving the quickest, allowing the driver to make an informed decision. Less time waiting in line means more time on the road, which means more money in their pockets.

THE PROBLEM

The whole fueling process can take up to an hour to complete. Fuel pump authorization takes an average of 6 minutes to complete before a trucker can even begin fueling. Membership of the loyalty program is on the decline. Fuel theft is a big problem for truck company owners.

THE SOLUTION

Display lane wait times so that drivers can make an informed decision on which lanes to line up in. Allow truck drivers to authenticate the fuel pump from their mobile app while still waiting in line. Gamify the loyalty program to encourage new users to join and to keep current users engaged. Implement geofencing in the app for pump authentication to reduce fuel theft.

USER RESEARCH

To truly capture the primary user needs, our team did an extensive research into the trucking industry. We even interviewed several truck drivers to gain a better understanding. What we found out was that the amount of time a driver is allowed to drive per day is highly regulated by the government. Truck drivers told us that the fueling process takes up a good amount of their time. The more time that they spend not driving meant that the less money they are earning.

On the business side, increasing membership of the loyalty program was one of their main goals. Membership numbers have been on the decline despite money spent on marketing efforts. Also, eliminating fuel theft is a big concern for the business.

From our user research we were able to identify the goals for both the business and the user. Below, we listed out the problems and then the solutions in order to meet these goals.

PERSONA

Developing a persona is a good way to empathize with your primary user. Through our user research we found out that the average income for a truck driver is around $42,000 a year. With this insight, we made the assumption that the majority of the drivers will have an Android mobile device. This lead us to start development for Android first and then start development for iOS in the second phase.

AFFINITY DIAGRAM

Our team organized an ideation session where we invited stakeholders, product managers, and engineers to join us. As a group we generated as many user stories as possible. We then worked together to put these user stories into groups. We used the user story groupings to identify the features that would be in the mobile app and desktop version.

DESKTOP PORTAL WIREFRAME

Just like the mobile app, the desktop version had elements of gamification implemented to keep the user engaged. The future iteration would have a leaderboard so that the user can see how they compared to their peers.
